I always joke that I have a brown thumb- or the opposite of a green thumb, whatever that might be. 😉 However, I really wanted to plant a garden this year. Nothing crazy complicated… just a few vegetables and some herbs.
Seeing that it is February, and it is frigid in the morning and heavenly in the afternoon, these plants would not be able to survive outside right now. So, I decided to start the seedlings in peat pots!
I purchased this kit with 72 peat pellets for about $12 at Home Depot. I got a variety of herbs and vegetable seed packets, including cilantro, basil, rosemary, oregano, brussel sprouts, parsley, green peppers, jalapenos, and cherry tomatoes.

To start, I mixed 4 cups of warm water with this Superthrive plant vitamin that was included in the kit.

I poured the water slowly over the pellets. I ended up needing about 2 more cups of warm water for it to be enough. The pellets were supposed to swell up about 1.5 inches, which they did over a period of about 20 minutes.

This is after the pellets soaked up the water. They grew about 1.5 inches.
Once they were swollen, I unwrapped the netting on the top of the pellets. Then, I stirred up the soil a bit using a pencil.

Next up… planting the seeds! I put in 2-3 seedlings in each pellet. The kit’s cardboard cover has a layout of all the pellets where you can write what is planted in which position.

I used the pencil to push the seeds down until they were all covered by the soil.

I covered the pellets with the plastic lid and let them sit away from sunlight.

The directions said to water a few times a day, which I did at first. However, the water seemed to sit for awhile, so I usually water once a day, just a little bit added at a time. I didn’t want to overwater.
Two weeks later, I have a few things budding. I’m hoping to see more in the next week or two!

Eventually, I will take these pellets and transfer them into my garden at the time the seed packets recommend them to be planted. I will keep you updated!
