The main part of our cabin- the living room- is part of the original cabin, built in the 1940s. This room has a very closed-in feeling. There aren’t big windows that let in light, so the room is very brown and dark.

We wanted to lighten the room up without getting rid of the brown walls and the “cabin-y” feel. My brother had an idea to paint the ceiling white!

Prep work is always so important. Some of the wood on the ceiling had a sap-like substance seeping through. It had hardened, but needed to be removed prior to painting.

You can see the little bubbles of sap lining up.

He used paint thinner and a scraper to get the sap off. This stuff was SO sticky, it would often fall down from the ceiling and several pieces ended up in my hair. Bleh!

He eventually got almost all of it down. He trimmed out the ceiling with white ceiling paint, and then rolled out the rest!

Check it out!! It feels so much lighter and brighter in here, yet it still very much feels like a cabin!
