My mom’s friend recently ordered some art to be printed on a large canvas. Well, when she got it, it was misprinted… there was a white border on the sides of the front of the canvas that shouldn’t have been there.
Her friend called and they sent her a replacement. And… you probably guessed it… it was the same exact thing. 🤪
My mom, being the creative person that she is, thought of a solution- to build a wooden frame around the canvas!
She used 1×2 poplar wood to go around the edge of the canvas. She also put another piece of trim, called a “stop”, in front of it. This trim piece is about 1-1/4″ in width.
Stephen built the 30″ x 30″ frame by cutting the wood and mitering the ends to 45 degree angles, and he used wood glue and finishing nails to connect the corners. At this point, the frame was separate from the canvas.
My mom stained the frame with provincial brown and let it dry overnight. She then used Metallic Glorious Gold acrylic paint and wiped it down slightly, allowing some of the dark base to show through. She then brushed Metallic Rose Gold over that and wiped it off some, too. When it was all dry, she sealed it with matte acrylic varnish. The frame had a nice color with some sheen to it.
She used sawtooth picture hangers on the corners to attach the frame to the canvas.
Here’s the final product! Doesn’t it completely change how this piece of art looks??
