One project I wanted to do while I was off this summer was a board and batten accent wall in our master bedroom. I originally wanted to do the double board and batten like I did in our guest bathroom. I went to Home Depot and priced out the wood, and it came out to be over $150. I just couldn’t justify that.
Fast forward to 5 days before my summer is over… I have gotten it done! But, instead of paying over $150, I only paid $35! Let me tell you about the hack I did.
These peel and stick trim pieces were on sale in the gold color for $9 for 32 feet and $25 for 64 feet. I got one of each. I needed about 90 feet in total, so this amount was great. My plan was to cut pieces of this trim to hang vertically.
This peel and stick trim is legit. Once it sticks to the wall, it is on there. I might have pulled off the paint in a few places where I messed up. 🤣
**MATH WARNING!**
I started off my doing the math and measurements. For me, this is the most time consuming part. This is what I did:
*our wall is 15 feet, 9 inches (or 189 inches) in width. From molding to molding, the height of the wall is 8 feet, 4 inches (or 100 inches).
*in total, I bought about 96 feet in trim. That’s 1,152 inches. So, I divided 1,152 by 100 (height of wall) to see how many battens I could do. The answer for that was 11.
*I then drew out how the battens would be positioned. I didn’t do them on the edges of the wall, so there would be 12 wall spaces and 11 battens. The battens themselves were 0.3 inches wide, so I multiplied 0.3 times 11 (the number of battens I would do) to get 3.3 inches. I subtracted that from 189 (the width of the wall) and got 185.7. I divided 185.7 by 12 (number of wall spaces) and I got 15.45. That’s the space that needed to be between battens.
**NO MORE MATH!**
Whew! Ok, back to work. I got the 32 feet delivered a day early, so, knowing I’d only get a few battens in, I started behind my bed so I could get that back in place sooner. I started the trim at the top, pulled off the tape protector on the back, used a long level and pressed the trim down while moving down the wall! I continued this all the way to the bottom.
One really great thing is that the trim is very thin, so it sits flesh up to the moulding. No overlaps here (like normal wood would have)!
I continued this using the spacing between the battens. Once they were up, I painted over the gold with the wall paint color, Oyster Bay by Sherwin Williams. It took a few coats!
Here’s the evolution of day 1.

Day 2- the 65 foot roll of trim was delivered! I had already measured out the spacing and drawn in pencil where each piece should go, so that was helpful for me today. I installed the trim and painted over it.

Check out the finished project!!

I ABSOLUTELY love it!!! There is no way to tell this is peel-and-stick versus thin pieces of wood. I would highly recommend this product if you’re interested in doing something similar!
