As an Amazon employee, I earn commission from purchases.

Our laundry isn’t very big, and it’s filled with a smorgasbord of things. (Random shelf, clothes hanging rack, towels, broom/mop, etc). We hang dry a lot of our clothes, and I was trying to come up with a (very) inexpensive way to have some more hanging spots.

Here are some before pictures:

I had looked into bigger shelving units, but they can add up. Plus, our space isn’t really that big. I tried to utilize the shelves we already had, and I came up with a plan. A less than $10 plan!

First, Stephen removed the broom holder, patched the holes, and painted over them.

He moved the broom holder behind the laundry room door. It fit perfectly behind the door, and I like it better because it’s more hidden now.

I purchased a curtain rod from Lowe’s. The width we needed was only about 28” so this size was the most we needed. (Here’s a similar one on Amazon)

Stephen screwed scrap pieces of wood in an “L” shape into the wall for 2 reasons. First, we wanted to screw the rod into the wall, but where we needed it to go wasn’t at a stud. Second, we were going to install a shelf above the rod, so it could sit on top of the wood. He painted them the color of the walls.

He got a piece of scrap wood from our stash, painted it, and beveled the edge. He screwed it down into the wood.

He screwed the rod into the wood piece and the side of our shelf.

What’s nice is that the white wire rack can close under this new rod, which provides more space when you walk in. Originally, the rack was right next to the door entrance when you walked it, so it felt cramped.

He covered the screws with wood filler and we painted it again…

Voila!

It’s no home and garden type laundry room, but it added functionality to our laundry room for less than $10. I’ll call that a success!
