One of the biggest projects that needed to be done at the cabin involved the deck. The deck was shaded by many trees, so when the wood got wet, it didn’t dry very quickly. Also, leaves would fall on the deck and just get stuck there. The combination of those things, along with the age of the wood, led to the wood softening. If you stepped on the wood, you’d almost fall through! Holes developed and it was a major safety hazard. We just didn’t ever go out there and enjoy the deck.

Stephen and my brother spent an entire day working on replacing the wood with Trex boards. Trex boards are composite, engineered pieces that are resistant to stains, fading, and scratches. We figured these would be the best things to use for the cabin’s deck. Luckily, the railings and framing of the deck were fine- they just needed to replace the flooring of the deck.

Here is what they did:

They tore off all of the floor boards.

They got the Trex delivered by Lowe’s. They came in 12 foot pieces, and we didn’t have a vehicle that was big enough to carry them. They ordered 26 pieces, and the total, with shipping, was around $800.

They had to buy special Trex decking fasteners to help with the spacing of the boards. They also connect the two boards together.

They installed the boards, piece by piece…

…until they finished! Check it out now:

So much better!!!
